Jeerakarishtam-cumin-seeds-digestion-treatments-in-ayurveda

Jeerakarishtam is an Ayurvedic  medicine used in post natal care. It is one of the medicines and often included as part of Ayurvedic diet after delivery. Jeerakarishtam is also known as jeerakadyarishta, Jirakadyarishtam, Jeerakadyarishtam, etc.

Jeerakarishtam Dose: 
12 ml, after food, two times a day for a period of 2 – 3 months.

Adjuvant: Dhanwantharam gulika, Mahadhanvantaram, Vayu gulika, and Asalyadi.

Jeerakarishtam uses: 

It is made from cumin seeds. Cumin seeds are very good to improve digestion and it also correct reparatory disorders.

Jeerakarishtam improves appetite and digestive capacity. It provides strength to the stomach, intestine and   liver. It is a good uterine detoxifier, which is recommended to eliminate the toxins from the uterus following the delivery.  

Jeerakarishtam is a suitable Ayurvedic medicine after delivery. It helps to improve strength of the mother, after delivery. It helps in normal involution of uterus, promotes lactation and immunity of the mother. Because most of the herbs used in Jeerakarishta are hot in nature, it also keeps mother away from cold and infections. It boosts immunity.


Apart from these benefits, Jeerakarishtam is also used in the treatment of frequent passing of stools, diarrhoea, indigestion etc. It helps to improve digestion power. It also correct the respiratory disorders like asthama, It improve the respiration.

Classical indications of Jeerakaristam:

  • Sootikamaya – After delivery complications in the mother like, fever, indigestion, cough, cold, etc.
  • Grahani – Malabsorption syndrome, IBS
  • Atisara – Diarrhea
  • Vahni Vikruti – digestive disorders
  • Asthma, loss of voice, hiccup and sprains.
  • All vata disorders.

Ingredients:

Quantity used for preparation

  1. Jeera (Cumin Seeds) – Cuminum Cyminum – 6 Kg
  2. Water – 49 Kg
  3. The Jeera Kwath (decoction) is prepared using Jeera and water, which is reduced to half i.e. 24.5 Kg. Then it is filtered and following ingredients are added in Jeera Kwath.
  4. Jaggery (Gur) – 14.4 Kg
  5. Dhataki – Woodfordia Fruticosa  – 768 grams
  6. Sonth (dried ginger root) – Zingiber Officinale – 96 grams
  7. Jaiphal (Nutmeg) – Myristica Fragrans – 48 grams
  8. Mustak (Nut Grass) – Cyprus Rotundus – 48 grams
  9. Dalchini (Cinnamon) – Cinnamomum Zeylanicum – 48 grams
  10. Tejpata (Indian Bay Leaf) – Cinnamomum Tamala – 48 grams
  11. Elaichi (Cardamom) – Elettaria Cardamomum – 48 grams
  12. Nagkesar – Mesua Ferrea – 48 grams
  13. Ajwain (Carom Seeds) -Trachyspermum Ammi – 48 grams
  14. Kababchini (Kankola) – Piper Cubeba – 48 grams
  15. Laung (Clove) – Syzygium Aromaticum – 48 grams


The mixture of Jeerakarishtam ingredients is left for 30 days in Asava Arishta Vessel and after 30 days, the liquid is filtered to obtain Jirakadyarishtam and stored in bottles.
